Abstract
The study analyzed the factors affecting oral health based on the use of preventive dental care services. The data was drawn from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES, 2016-2018). The subjects were 12,426 people aged 19 or older, and were divided into three age groups. The study was focused on dental caries and periodontal diseases, which are representative oral diseases, and divided into three different age groups (19~39, 40~64, and 65 and older). The influencing factors on the prevalence of dental disease and the relative progression of the disease(estimated medical expenses) by dental check-up were analyzed utilizing the two-part model. As a result of the study, the prevalence rates of dental caries and the estimated cost of treatment were higher among the people who did not take the dental check-up in all age groups, even after controlling the variables that could affect them. In specific, the result of periodontal disease showed a significant difference in the 40-64 year old group. The risk was 1.23 times higher and the medical expenses was 17.4% higher in those who did not receive dental check-up within a year. In addition, it was affected by household income, education level, and health behavior, and oral hygiene management was important in the elderly. It is necessary to seek ways to improve continuous management and dental check-up for the prevention and initial recognition of dental diseases, especially among the senior population.
